Portabella – 3G 4G LTE Bonding

Fastest & most reliable mobile Internet
3G 4G LTE Challenges

The Portabella is a 3G / 4G / LTE bonding device with Broadband Bonding technology that provides cost effective portable Internet access for Remote offices, mobile and portable deployments.

In peered mode Portabella provides uplink and downlink bonding for any protocol between a mobile location and the host office via bonding together multiple cellular wireless Internet access cards for increased performance and reliability. Depending on the model, Portabella aggregates the capacity of as many as four, six, seven or eight cellular data modems providing increased access bandwidth in both uplink and downlink directions for the communication link to the host office.

Portabella portable Internet access device has various models and all models support 3G bonding, 4G bonding and LTE bonding with some models also including WiFi and wired Internet WAN ports.

Different Portabella appliances suit different customer requirements. The standard portabella appliance is ideal for indoor use while the industrial ruggedized models are best fit for more challenging mobile or portable deployments.

For train and specialty vehicle deployments such as firetrucks, police care and ambulances, the Portabella vibration tolerance and passive cooling ruggedized chassis models make them an ideal candidate for delivering robust, high performance mobile Internet with their high temperature and wide range providing easy external access to up to 4 or 8 SIM cards.

Single 3G 4G LTE is too fragile

Cellular connection are prone to fluctuations and variations in performance by their very nature. No matter which carrier it is, connectivity will be unpredictable and unreliable at times, for applications that require uninterrupted Internet connectivity.

Not enough bandwidth

Sustaining high enough rates for applications that require high throughput such as hotspot services in mass transportation vehicles or special events, is not possible with only one cellular modem.

Live video streaming is hard with one modem

3G 4G LTE cellular modems are great alternatives for more expensive satellite dishes, with lower cost and enhanced mobility. However, live webcasting or live video streaming from the field over a single cellular modem is never successful because of the variability of single modem performance.

Low reliability for mission critical applications

Certain real time applications are mission critical and cannot afford to have disconnections. This problem is increased in vehicular setups, where the moving vehicle will cause connectivity problems and application failures when implemented based on a single 3G, 4G or LTE wireless network.

3G 4G LTE Bonding

Portabella is a Broadband Bonding™ appliance that combines and intelligently manages 2, 4 or 8 cellular sim connections from any of your service providers. Portabella can stripe a single session over the available paths and therefore create a single fast pipe (requires peering service).

Live video broadcasting & webcasting

Portabella supports a bonding tunnel that is optimized for live video transmission (Streamer add-on). Streamer applies a special coding before transmitting partial streams and therefore any network problems such as packet loss, latency or jitter can be shielded from the video application.

Bonded WAN Speed

Portabella is a packet-level load balancing 3G 4G LTE router. Portabella can bond cellular Internet access lines for all types of traffic (including encrypted traffic such as VPN) for aggregated downlink and uplink capacity when peered over the Internet with a Mushroom Relay located at the headquarter office or data center. The optional Broadband Bonding Service subscription enables downlink/uplink bonding.

Live Video Streaming

Portabella support a free add-on tunnel (Streamer) that is optimized for live video streaming from the field to any CDN or video server over the bonded 3G, 4G, LTE modems. This video optimized bonding tunnel enables live video streaming applications to be 100% shielded from any network problems such as packet loss, latency, jitter or even full modem disconnects. Even during those situations, your live video stream will continue without a glitch.

Elastic Static IP

Static IP addresses in the cloud (or from your data-center) can be mapped onto the Portabella. This means that static IP is available for services that rely on stable IP addressing (such as VPN, VoIP/SIP etc.) and inbound network access is available, even during 3G, 4G, LTE outages, as long as at least one of the WAN links is connected.

Network Security & Scalability

Portabella can be configured either in pass-through to function inline with the existing legacy firewalls/routers with existing network configuration untouched. If preferred, Portabella can also be installed as the primary firewall/router with strong encryption (up to AES 256), website blocking, DNS redirection and advanced filtering, all based on field-proven secure platform.

Zero-Touch Install & Management

Portabellas are preconfigured before shipment and therefore supports zero-touch installation when received. Any additional configuration or monitoring can be done through the web-based management interface either locally or remotely, as well as through a cloud based Monitoring Portal that provides in depth monitoring capabilities. All wireless ISPs are supported worldwide.

Wide Area Networking (WAN)

Wireless networking is one of the more compelling technologies to be realized in the last ten years.

Intel did its part to support the technology when it included support for the I.E.E.E.E standard 11.G wireless communications. Verizon has one of the largest broadband wireless networks of its kind anywhere in the world and wireless networking routers are being utilized in homes and offices all across the country.

Wireless network growth has had effects on other equipment offerings besides routers. Most printers sold in the Qatar today are wireless networking ready.

Laptops are sold in increasing numbers with the Intel Centrino chip set, which includes the 11.G standard. Many experts are concerned about security issues associated with this technological boon.

What should your business do before implementing this technology in your office?

Structured Cabling

Structured Cabling is a set of standards that determine how to wire a data center, office or building for data or voice communications, using Cat5e (or more commonly nowadays Cat6) cable and RJ45 sockets. These standards define how to lay the cabling in a ‘star’ formation, such that all outlets terminate at a central patch panel (which is normally 19 inch rack-mounted), from where it can be determined exactly how these connections will be used. Each outlet can be ‘patched’ into a data network switch (normally also rack mounted alongside), or patched into a ‘telecoms patch panel’ which forms a bridge into a PABX telephone system, thus making the connection a voice port.

Lines patched as data ports into a network switch require simple ‘straight-through’ patch cables at the other end to connect a computer, whereas voice patches to PABXs require an adapter at the remote end to translate the RJ45 pin config into a 6-pin BT socket. Depending on the type of PABX, these may need to be ‘master’ or ‘secondary’ adapters.

It is normal to see different colour patch cables used in the patch panel to help identify which type of connection is being carried, though the structured cabling standards do not require this.

The standards demand that all eight connectors in the Cat6 cable are connected, resisting the temptation to ‘double-up’ or use one cable for both voice and data. This is generally a good thing as it means that they fully support more modern inventions like Power-over-Ethernet which require the so-far unused brown cables.

Structured cabling falls into the following six sub-systems:

Entrance Facilities is where the building interfaces with the outside world.
Equipment Rooms host equipment which serves the users inside the building.
Telecommunications Rooms are where various telecommunications and data equipment resides, connecting the backbone and horizontal cabling sub-systems.
Backbone Cabling as the name suggests carries the signals between the entrance facilities, equipment rooms and telecommunications rooms.
Horizontal Cabling is the wiring from telecommunications rooms to the individual outlets on the floor.
Work-Area Components connect end-user equipment to the outlets of the horizontal cabling sub-system.

When GLOBAL SCOPE assumes the responsibility of your cabling installation, our project managers schedule, budget, test, coordinate, and document the entire job. We work closely with the different construction trades to make sure schedules are coordinated for an on time, on budget delivery. The ability to run all of your cabling requirements through one firm saves time and lowers the total cost of the project.

We provide all of our clients with a complete set of map documentation and test results of the system. The drawings accurately communicate the scope of work while in progress. Once the job is complete, they become a set of as-builts allowing for easy maintenance, troubleshooting and expansion plans. GLOBAL SCOPE guarantees that all standards are met to achieve optimal performance.

Once a job is complete, our support services can handle cabling moves, additions, and changes. In case of an emergency, our engineers are available to troubleshoot, provide parts, and develop contingency plans.
